Storing Your Jewelry

Along with proper cleaning and care for your jewelry, it is important to store your jewelry properly.  When jewelry is just thrown in a drawer or jewelry box, chains become knotted as well as the finish on the jewelry can become scratched.  Most of us are always in a hurry but taking those few extra seconds to put your jewelry away in proper storage will make a big difference in the way your jewelry will look for years to come.

Some suggestions for storing jewelry are:

It is best if you separate your jewelry by gold, sterling silver, and gemstone jewelry and store them in their own areas.  When gold or sterling silver jewelry is stored together with pieces that have gemstones, the gold and sterling silver pieces of jewelry may become scratched from coming in contact with the gemstones.

Storing your gold jewelry in a soft cloth or jewelry pouch will definitely protect that smooth shiny finish from becoming scratched or marked.

Sterling Silver jewelry should be stored in small plastic storage bags, with each piece of jewelry being stored in its own bag.  Placing an anti-tarnish strip in the plastic bag with the jewelry will keep your sterling silver from tarnishing so quickly.

Be sure to store your jewelry in a safe place.  It should not be kept in an area that gets too hot or cold or tends to be too humid.

Storing jewelry that has emeralds and/or opals on it in a safety-deposit box for long periods of time is not a good idea.  The stones can become damaged when stored in a safety deposit box due to the dryness of the air.  Other gemstones such as rubies, sapphires, and diamonds are not affected when stored in an area with no humidity.
