While precious gemstones have hardness ratings between 7.5 and 10, semiprecious gemstones have hardness ratings between 2.5 (Amber) and 8.5 (Alexandrite). Extra care must be given to semiprecious gemstones as many of them can be easily scratched or become damaged by large temperature changes (such as leaving it by a heater vent or in a hot vehicle). Some semiprecious stones (Amethyst, Aquamarine and Citrine) will lose some of their color if kept out in the sun. It should also be noted that some semiprecious gemstones should not be cleaned in a home ultrasonic cleaner so it is best to be safe and clean your gemstones with warm soapy water.
